We
only run a handful of trips each summer. This enables us to maintain
program quality and consistency and to get to know each student
on a personal level. Mike Dawson, the Owner & Director, is able
to participate in almost every trip - whether he is teaching sailing
or just being a part of the group.
Small
Groups
Each trip is limited to 10 or 12 students. A small group assures
individual attention, creates a closer, more cohesive unit, and
activities run smoothly and efficiently. We also group students
by age, and will never have a 13 and 18 year old on the same trip.
Responsibility
With help from instructors, students take full responsibility for
the daily operations of their expedition. This includes everything
from menu planning and cooking to navigating our way to an anchorage.
Seamless
Transitions
Expeditions are carefully planned to maximize time in the backcountry,
which means that, when possible, we seamlessly transition from one
activity to the next without any van travel in between. This means
less time loading gear and driving and more time exploring the wilderness.
Quality
Time in Activities
It takes more than one or two days to gain confidence when learning
how to sail, to paddle a kayak or to travel through the backcountry
efficiently. When possible, we focus on each activity for as much
time as necessary to achieve confidence and have a genuinely successful
experience.
Motivated
Students & Exceptional Instructors
We strongly believe that a key aspect to our success is limiting
our enrollment to motivated and genuinely interested students. Some
students find out about us on there own and others are encouraged
by the friends or family to participate, but they all have in common
their willingness to participate and to be a part of a amazing experience.
Exceptional
Sailing Instruction
Our expeditions that have sailing components travel with two boats,
with only 5 or 6 students on board, maximizing individual instruction
time. Since we operate in U.S. waters, we have to uphold the high
safety standards set by the U.S. Coast Guard. Each boat is run by
a USCG-licensed Captain. We are the only program of this kind that
does this - and we believe that is the key to our success when it
comes to sailing instruction. Similar programs that sail outside
of U.S. waters, are not required to have U.S. licensed Captains,
and/or sail with 10 or more participants per boat. Students that
participate in an Williwaw expedition with a sailing component have
a truly unique experience.
